Night Walking

Night Walking

the Moon
the pale streaks
along the leaves
of variegated flax

illuminate the place
where the path should be

A stumble
does not happen

a screech
from some
unidentified bird
is night walking

Night Walking is a very simple poem punctuated only by upper case in an attempt to simulate the lack of forward information for the night walker. The upper case letters highlight new realisations in the same way that the night walker will discover a new section of the walk on arrival and not by anticipation. The “stumble” stanza is similarly structured so the realisation of how close the walker was to tripping is only realised after the stumble has been avoided.
